Parshas Ekev

To This Week's Torah Thoughts

Just Desserts

Our Parsha starts out with the word "vehaya" which as our Sages point out always introduces verses of good fortune; and rightfully so, for the letters of this word are those of His Holy Name of Compassion. The first two letters, Yud Heh, which govern the spiritual worlds, are preceded by the letters Vav Heh, the last two letters that govern the physical world. The Torah thus teaches us that if we attend to His Commandments in this physical world, He will distribute His Celestial blessings accordingly.

There was once a wagon driver who bought a lazy horse. Whenever he fed it, it refused to pull the wagon. He finally resorted to hanging a carrot in front of it till it worked itself to death. Afterwards he bought a good-natured horse that transported him faithfully in spite of being well fed.

It may not be well known, but all people, including the wicked, do only Hashem's will. The main difference between them is that there are those who try not to serve Him, and those who tangibly express their desire to do His Will. There is one more important difference between them: the wicked who had to be forced into doing their job are paid accordingly — begrudgingly, minimally, and painfully; the righteous who did their part willingly are likewise given their just desserts —everlasting pleasure.
