Parshas Dvarim

To This Week's Torah Thoughts

Looking Back

Almost half of the appearances of the word re'eh (look) occur in the fifth and last book of the Torah, the book of Dvarim, and a seemingly unproportionate majority of those appear in its first Parsha. Another statistically significant finding is the words ba'es hahee (at that time) that appear three times in the first four books, and twelve times in the last book, nine of which appear in our Parsha.

The book of Dvarim is a recapitulation of the journey of the Chosen Nation through the wilderness, protected by the supernal force of the Shechina that surrounded them at all times. Moshe Rabbeinu was asking the people in Hashem's name to stop and do a little soul-searching and think whether they really did justice to the overwhelming beneficence that He bestowed upon them, to take a reckoning of their successes and failures. In the midst of the fray we are often confused but when looking back at the aftermath many important conclusions can be drawn: While a person is struggling he very often doesn't see this, but in his old age at least, he should sit down with himself and give an accounting, how much has Hashem done for me and how much have I really done for Him.

What is time, after all? If Hashem were to want the exact same thing for two seconds for example, nothing in the world would change, and by definition time would not move. Time is therefore the constant changing of the expression of His Will, every split second being a slightly different expression allowing for small changes in that short 'time'. Ba'es hahee thus means in that expression of His Will, and in each new expression more forms of beneficence are created.

As the clock turns, bringing forth more and more opportunities, don't forget that this very moment was created for you to reciprocate. As your heart beats, remember that each beat brings with it endless forms of kindliness, all waiting with bated breath for you to pay attention to them and give thanks to their Creator.
